When we bought this house I immediately started pinning to my tone on tone living room design board. It was nice to see our home like a blank canvas since the previous owners did the bare minimum. There was still a lot that needed to be done, like drywall patches that needed to be fixed, holes that needed to be filled, and trim that needed to be touched up. But luckily it was all cosmetic.
Designing our Living Room
I wanted to share the process first because I think it’s important to start with our living room inspiration. Every project I start begins by gathering anything that catches my eye and then narrowing it down from there. This creates a style or vibe that’s all your own and prevents you from designing something that doesn’t fit your needs.
The best way to do this is by creating a secret board on Pinterest, and literally pinning everything you like. Then you narrow it down by your needs and what you want your house to feel like.
After seeing all the images I pulled, I noticed there was a common theme. Everything I was pinning was earthy-beige tones, and I was honestly surprised. My paint style has always been simply white because it always looks bright and clean. But I’ve gotten to the point where all I see is white homes, and I wanted something different that still complimented the furniture I already own.
Tone on Tone
The one piece of furniture I wanted to get rid of was our old couch. It served our family for years but it wasn’t holding up to all the love it got from our toddler, cat and, the last time we moved. As soon as I came across this off-white sectional that was made from synthetic fibers, I knew I found the couch I wanted. I wanted my furniture to reflect a sophisticated retreat that makes you feel calm but refreshed.
Modern Contemporary Furniture
I mentioned in my Small Updates: Living Room blog post how much I love the modern contemporary style of furniture. My love of this style comes from my environment and the way natural elements are always included. So I’ve been sourcing furniture online and scanning Facebook’s marketplace for anything worth noting which I’ll share more of soon.
I read a status the other day and it said: “once you go linen, you never go back” and it’s true! I love linen and I’m hunting down beige tone linen curtains that will add the finishing touches.
As you can see we still have a lot more decisions to make, budgets to organize and timelines to set. It’s not easy trying to update your home during COVID but I hope you will enjoy our home renovation. Maybe it will inspire you to do your own renovations.
