In honor of Valentines day and because there are so many new faces around here, I wanted to share a little bit about myself. I was inspired to share my own story of how we met after reading Mara’s post from MLovesM. If you haven’t read how her and her husband met you can read it here.
The story of how Tony and I met
Tony and I met on the first day of grade nine in homeroom. He was the class clown and always making everyone laugh including me. I was best friends with his cousin and somehow Tony and I ended up hanging out all the time. I always knew he had a crush on me. Sometimes we would go to parties and he’d always make sure I was okay. He was so protective and still is, which always made me feel safe around him. I would hear stories of him telling other guys to stay away from me, which I found kind of cute but annoying at the same time, after all, we were in high school.
Then one summer I invited him and his cousin to my parent’s cottage, and we seriously had the best time. I was surprised when my dad took Tony fishing that morning which must have meant my dad liked him. That night they stayed over, and it was the first time I was ever allowed a boy to spend the night (not like there was anyone else lol). Tony says he was too scared to tell me how he felt and I was so square that it probably would have ruined our friendship anyway. That night we fell asleep holding hands and I knew then how much I loved him.
After that, we stayed close friends and always talked. That fall I was going to college in the city, and he was about to move to Alberta. I knew I need to say goodbye before he left. I just remember being so sad about him leaving and drove to his mom’s to say goodbye. That was that last time we saw each other.
Until 2014 ish when we started talking again on Facebook. By that time I had finished school and moved back home and bought a house with my sister. Tony and I had both been in other relationships that didn’t work out. Then one day he messaged me that he was back home visiting and asked if I wanted to hang out. I made him walk my sister’s dog with me to the park.
It was years since I saw him last, and he was different. But at the same time, it felt like nothing had changed after all those years and we were still high school besties. He wasn’t the grade nine class clown anymore, he grew up and it looked good on him. Meanwhile, I still felt like I did in high school, those same feelings never went away.
We kept in contact and finally when I was vacationing in Mexico with my sister something just changed. I missed him and was done pretending like I couldn’t stop thinking about him. I always knew I wanted to settle down and have a family eventually, but I really needed to find myself first. The appeals of traveling the world alone were gone, and I really just wanted to give us a try.
We agreed that we needed to be together, and I booked a flight out west as soon as I got home from Mexico. I needed to see him and see where this was going to go. The rest is history as they say. Years later, we finally have everything we’ve ever wanted including a beautiful baby girl. He still tells me all the time that he’s always known we’d be together, and the truth is I always knew we would too.
Looking back I wish we would have been together sooner. Because a lifetime doesn’t feel long enough, even when you find your soulmate in high school.
Okay now, it’s your turn to tell me how you met your other half. I seriously enjoy reading stories of how people fell in love.
Another recent story I shared was how I overcame prepartum depression.2
